You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

Step 1

For the first step of the tutorial on how to draw a caterpillar, we will start with the stick it will sit on.

To do this, you will draw some lines with some small bumps in them.

This will form a thin rod or a branch, and both ends of it will be fairly flat and angled. We’ll leave a gap over it on the right-hand side, but we’ll soon fill this void with the caterpillar itself.

Step 2

Draw the head of the caterpillar
Now that you’ve finished drawing your caterpillar, we can now start on top. The head may look a bit complicated and detailed, but it’s not as hard as it looks!

As long as you keep a close eye on the reference image you should have no problem with it. The head is drawn with many rounded lines to give it a wrinkled look.

There will also be a small part of the face near the front, as shown in the reference image.

Step 3

Now, start drawing the body of the caterpillar
With the head drawn, we’ll start with the body in this step of the how to draw a caterpillar tutorial.

The body will have a similar design to the head in that it will be drawn with many curves to create a segmented, wrinkled effect for the caterpillar.

In this step, you can also use some sharp lines at the base of the caterpillar for a sense of its front.

Step 4

Complete the body outline in this step
Your caterpillar drawing is in good shape! Now you really get the hang of it, so you won’t have any problems with this next step.

Just continue drawing the segmented body you started in the previous step. At this step there will also be some swelling at the base of the caterpillar’s body with respect to the rounded legs underneath.

The body will also become thinner as it approaches the back of the caterpillar.

Once you’ve finished sketching, the space left in the branch will be filled in, and then you’ll be ready to add some final details in the next step!

Step 5

Now you can add some final details
It’s almost time to add some color to your painting, but first, we have some final details to add to this fifth step of the tutorial on how to draw a caterpillar.

The details that we have in our reference images are subtle yet effective! You can add some small circles to the caterpillar segments to complete our details.

That should do it for the final steps, but you don’t have to move on to the next one yet!

Before you continue, be sure to add any details of your own that you might want! You can paint the background and add some leaves and other plants to it for an idea. Maybe you can also draw some caterpillars or other insects!

This is your chance to get really creative and see what great ideas you can come up with.

We can’t wait to see what wonderful touches you add to this image!

Step 6

Complete your caterpillar painting with some color
That brings you to the final step of your caterpillar drawing! This step is going to be an interesting one, as it brings some great color to your painting.
