Step 1
Start by drawing a horizontal line. This line is called the horizon line. The horizon is the point where the ground or water meets the sky.
Step 2
Start drawing the islands with mountains on one side of the picture. To do so, draw a curved, bumpy line from the edge of your paper to the center of the horizon.
Step 3
Draw another island on the opposite side, again using a curved, bumpy line.
Step 4
Draw the sun. Surround a circle with a long curved line. Note that because the sun is setting, part of it is obscured by the horizon.
Step 5
Draw the reflection of the sun on the water. To do this, draw a series of straight, curved, and zigzag lines to shade the upside-down triangle below the sun.
Step 6
Start drawing a palm tree emerging from one of the islands. Extend two curves from the island to the sun, allowing the lines to meet at one point. This forms the stem.
Step 7
Draw leaves on a palm tree. From the top of the trunk, extend several short curved lines in pairs. Allow each pair to meet at a sharp point.
Step 8

Draw a boat at the base of the coconut tree.
Step 9
Add the final detail to your drawing. Draw curved, wavy lines at an angle above the water to represent waves. Draw some birds flying across the sun. Each bird can consist of a simple line – a loose, curved “M” shaped line with a point pointing down. This line serves as a simple reflection of the shape of a bird in flight.
Step 10
Color your sunset drawing. Notice that in our example the islands, trees, and birds are obscured by sunlight. Finally, don’t forget to add sunset colors like yellow, pink, purple, and blue to the water, which signify the reflection of the sky.
