    STEP 1

Now that we’ve warmed up, let’s draw a rough circle for the head. Remember to keep your strokes loose and light. We don’t want to press too hard on our pencil because we will erase the instructions later.

    STEP 2

Once you’ve placed the circle on the paper, draw a cross at a small angle. Follow the “U” shape for the jawline. Make sure the “U” shape is in the same direction as the cross.

    STEP 3

Draw two ovals for the torso and hip positions. We wanted to track the flow and energy of our rough sketch study. Notice that the hips are wider than the rib cage. If you feel your pose is too stiff, you can add a line of action to reinforce the mermaid’s gesture.

    STEP 4

Next, we will draw the center lines of the torso and hips. From there, we can add the lower rib cage and some contrapposto shifts.

    STEP: 5

Draw the tail using progressively smaller “S” shapes.

    STEP: 6

The arms can be divided into round, cylindrical and glove-like shapes. Use the lines to help you determine the length of your mermaid arm. Next, add flowing “S” lines for the mermaid’s caudal fin.

    STEP: 7

Now we can add rough ovals for the eyes and lips. Add a small curved line to place the nose and divide the lip oval with a line. Helpful tip, the bottom lip is a bit thicker than the top.

    STEP: 8

Blocks the shape of hairs and breasts. At this stage, your mermaid will resemble a mannequin. Remember to keep your drawing light. If you are having trouble drawing light lines, you can use a 2H pencil to draw your bottom line.

    STEP: 9

Now that we have the foundation, we can refine our shapes and add details. Identify the eyes, hands, and bra shell. Note that clean lines are darker as opposed to shortened lines.

    STEP: 10

Delete all your unwanted lines. Continue to refine your line art and add a few fish scales for texture. At this stage, you have now completed your mermaid! If you want to continue working on your drawing, the next step explains some essential pencil coloring tips.

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

    Step 1

There are some pretty intricate details in this mermaid picture, so to make things easier, I’m going to take things slow and break it down into smaller steps.
For the first part of the mermaid drawing tutorial, we will start with the mermaid’s face.

To draw the face, start with a sharp curve ending at a small point as you can see in the reference image.

Once you have that line in place, just add two squat shapes on either side for the ears.

    Step 2

Now draw some details on the face and neck
The details on the mermaid’s face may look complicated, but it’s all made up of pretty simple lines! The eyes are drawn with two small, curved lines, with a smaller, more angular line for the nose.

Then, give her a slight smile with a curve under her nose.

Once you have the face, add a neck to your mermaid drawing and paint some details for the ears.

For small details like these, it’s best to use a fine tip pen or a very sharp pencil to make drawing details easier.

    Step 3

Next we’ll give your mermaid some hair
Mermaids are almost always depicted with long silky hair, and this mermaid is no exception.

First, use two lines on the top of the face to create a section of hair. Then draw two lines going down from above towards the position of the shoulders.

Once you have it like in the reference image, we can move on to step 4.

    Step 4

Now let’s start with the arms and body
For step 4 of the how to draw mermaid tutorial, we will tackle your mermaid’s arms and chest. For this step, carefully refer to the reference image will help a lot!

The arm should extend straight out from where the neckline ends. They will be in a comfortable position to suggest that she is lazily floating in the water.

Once you’ve used some curves to draw her arms, you can draw seashells for her bikini top.

    Step 5

Let’s add a belt and more hair
Use some pretty simple lines, just draw from the bikini shell down to make the waist for your mermaid drawing.

Then draw some wavy lines down from her arms to show the hair behind her.

Make sure you position the lines so it looks like they’re going to join the upper arm hair.

Finally, draw a slight curve below her waist, as this will be the starting point for her fishtail.

    Step 6

Now give your mermaid a tail
Every mermaid needs a fishtail, and we’ll start adding it to your mermaid drawing in this step.

This will be done using two curved lines going down from the waist and bending to the right as you can see in the picture.

Once you have these lines in place, you can also draw the ends of her hair flowing to the right side of her waist.

    Step 7

Draw at the end of the tail
Now that you have drawn most of the fish’s tail, you can stretch it out a bit and then add in the end of the fin using some lines as shown in the image.

Then you can draw a cute little flower in her hair to give her a pretty look!

    Step 8

Next, we’ll add some final details
Your mermaid drawing is almost done! In this step, we will focus on some final small details.

They will include some long and thin lines in the hair to give the hair some texture. Then, use a series of small curves all over the fish’s tail to give it a scaly look. Finally, add some lines to the tail for more texture!

These are the details we’ll be adding, but which ones do you think would look good?

    Step 9

Now complete your mermaid with some colors
The details are finally done and you can do the coolest of all the steps: color!
