Native to shallow reefs off the coasts of Australia and Papua New Guinea, this member of the carpet shark family lay motionless along the ocean floor with excellent camouflage and ambush passing prey. via. Although not very large for a shark (it is about 4 feet long), it is very voracious. It was recorded that it ate a bamboo shark the size of 80% of its total size. The name wobbegong is of Australian Aboriginal origin, but its exact meaning is unknown. Tassels refer to strange tendrils that protrude from the edge of the body to help it blend in with its surroundings. It was once known to bite and kill people, perhaps mistaking them for its natural prey.
