Step 1
Draw a circle for the head and one for the body of the bird. These circles are of different sizes to help you in your next woodpecker drawing step.
Step 2
Begin sketching the basic form of the woodpecker’s body. Then draw two short horisontal lines for the bird’s beak and claws.
Step 3
Using the outline from the previous step, this stage will help you outline the bird more precisely.
Step 4
Continue sketching in detail the woodpecker’s body and head. In addition, you need to outline the crow’s feet. If your bird happens to be perched on a tree branch, you can sketch it out right away.
Step 5
Erase excess pencil lines from your drawing and then proceed to work in more detail.

If you choose to draw the woodpecker with a pencil, the shading will go smoothly if you use a #2 soft pencil.
