Step 1:
Sketch the bat’s head, body and ears
Drawing step: Draw the head, body and ears of the bat
Start drawing the bat with the tip of a rounded triangle. The top corner is slightly rounded, while the right cheek is much more rounded. Leave the bottom left corner for the moment.
Then draw a pea body under your head.
Finally, mark two large ears on the top of the head. They are created from two curves that meet at the point. Now, different species of bats have different ear sizes, so feel free to make your bat ears as long or short as you like. We’re going to have an exaggerated, funny, cartoonish look here – hence the very long ears.
Step 2:
Sketch of the bat’s face and legs
Drawing step: Draw the face and legs of the bat
Next, draw the bat’s face. Since we are drawing a cartoon bat, we have used two large ovals for the eyes. Draw a small, upside down arc for the nose and another, wider and flatter arc for the smiley mouth.
Then add two skinny legs, one on each side at the bottom of the body. They are again drawn very simply from two parallel curves.
Step 3:
Drawing bat wing skeleton
Drawing step: Draw the bat wing skeleton
Great, finally a step where our drawing stops looking like Piglet from Winnie the Pooh and becomes a bat.
The wings of a bat are made of a membrane of skin that hangs between the arm and the long fingers of the bat. Here we are drawing a simple frame for the wings. Draw two arcs going up from the shoulders, one on each side of the body – these are very simple arms. Then, draw three long fingers – again just simple curves – spread out and down from the top of each arm.
Now a real bat will have four fingers, but the first two are so close together that in our simple drawing we can get away with just three.
Step 4:
Drawing bat wings
Drawing step: Draw the membrane of bat wings
Finish off the bat’s wings by drawing a series of arcs for the bottom edge of the wing. Connect these fingers together, and also draw an arc to connect the inner fingers to the bat’s leg. Finally, add a small tail between the legs.
And while you’re done with drawing those smooth arcs, add two more curves to mark the folds at the ears.
That’s enough for the sketch, let’s sketch and improve our bat next.
