Why it’s great: The enclosed world of a cruise ship – with all its dignified decks, long corridors and dining rooms – finally turned into an ideal location for a Steven Soderbergh movie. In telling the story of a famous author (Meryl Streep) traveling for an award with two old college friends (Candice Bergen and Dianne Wiest) and a sensitive nephew (Lucas Hedges), the script of Short story writer Deborah Eisenberg sees it right. a combination of gentle antics and cunning intrigue. Many scenes of cozy meals and fancy cocktails have an unpleasant tension that is highlighted by the sudden editing by Soderbergh and his stabilizing camera. More broadly, the setting allows an inept mind filmmaker to question creativity, money, and personal responsibility that confuses his job, turning what could be a boon. The cool vacation turns into a little more hard ride. As with last year’s equally risky Flying Bird, everything that talks becomes action.
