Not every picture tells a story. Some paintings evoke moods and memories instead of narratives. That is also the case with music. Saudade, by Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, is a great example. The title refers to mixed feelings of nostalgia and off joy. Martinaitytė translates that into sound, directing the symphony orchestra to capture texture, color and light. Brass players make strange noises by blowing and singing into their instruments. Percussionists place cymbals on top of the timpani to create a sparkling effect. Music, like powerful waves of emotion, surged in giant brass peaks and soaring strings before returning to calm.
