    Step 1

There are some pretty intricate details in this mermaid painting, so to make things easier, I’m going to take it slow and break it down into smaller steps.

For the first part of the mermaid drawing tutorial, we’ll start with the mermaid’s face.

To draw the face, start with a sharp curve ending with a small point as you can see in the reference image.

Once you have that line in place, just add two side squats for the ears.

    Step 2

Now let’s draw some details on the face and a mermaid
The details on the mermaid’s face look complicated, but they’re all made up of pretty simple lines! The eyes are drawn using two small curved lines, with a smaller, more angular line for the nose.

Then, give her a slight smile with a curve under her nose.

Once you have the face, add a neck to your mermaid drawing and draw some details for the ears.

For small details like this, it’s best to use a fine-tipped ink pen or a very pointed pencil to make the details easier to draw.

    Step 3

Next we will give your mermaid some mermaid
Mermaids are almost always depicted with long flowing hair and this mermaid is no exception.

First, use two lines on the top of the face to part the hair. Then draw two lines from the top down towards the position of the shoulders.

    Step 4

Now let’s start with the mermaid arms and body
For step 4 in our tutorial on how to draw a mermaid, we will be working on your mermaid’s arms and chest. For this step, carefully refer to the reference image will help a lot!

The arms should extend straight from where the lines of the neck end. They will be in a comfortable position to suggest that she is floating in the water.

Once you’ve used some curves to draw her arms, you can draw seashells for her bikini top.

    Step 5

Let’s add a waistline and more mermaids
Using some pretty straight lines, just draw from the scalloped bikini down to create the waistline for your mermaid drawing.

Then draw some wavy lines from the arm to show the hair flowing behind her.

Make sure you position the lines so that it looks like they’ll join the hair above the arm.

Finally, draw a slightly curved line below her waist, as this will be the starting point of her fishtail.

    Step 6

Now give your mermaid a mermaid
Every mermaid needs a mermaid tail, and we’ll start adding it to your mermaid drawing in this step.

This will be done using two curves going down from the waist and curving to the right as you can see in the picture.

Once you have these lines in place, you can also draw the ponytail down to the right of her waist.

    Step 7

Draw at the end of the mermaid
Now that you’ve drawn most of the fish’s tail, you can stretch it out a bit and then add to the end of the fin using some lines like the one in the image.

You can then draw a cute little flower in her hair to make it look pretty!

    Step 8

Next, we will add some final mermaid details
Your mermaid drawing is almost done! In this step, we will focus on some final small details.

They will include some thin and long lines in the hair to give the hair some texture. Then, use a series of small curves all over the fish’s tail to give it a scaly look. Finally, add some lines to the tail for more texture!

These are the details we’ll be adding, but which one do you think would be nice?

    Step 9

Now finish your mermaid with some colormermaid
The details are finally done and you can take on the most exciting step of all: coloring!

This is a great opportunity for you to use some of your favorite colors to finish off your beautiful mermaid.

    Draw So Cute

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

    STEP 1

Now that we’ve warmed up, let’s draw a rough circle for the head. Remember to keep your strokes loose and light. We don’t want to press too hard on our pencil because we will erase the instructions later.

    STEP 2

Once you’ve placed the circle on the paper, draw a cross at a small angle. Follow the “U” shape for the jawline. Make sure that the “U” shape is in the same direction as the cross.

    STEP 3

Draw two ovals for the torso and hip positions. We wanted to track the flow and energy of our rough sketch study. Notice that the hips are wider than the rib cage. If you feel your pose is too stiff, you can add an action line to reinforce the mermaid’s gesture.

    STEP 4

Next, we will draw the center lines of the torso and hips. From there, we can add the lower rib cage and some contrapposto shifts.

    STEP: 5

Draw the tail using the “S” shapes that flow downwards.

    STEP: 6

The arms can be divided into round, cylindrical and glove-like shapes. Use the lines to help you determine the length of your mermaid arm. Next, add flowing “S” lines for the mermaid’s caudal fin.

    STEP: 7

Now we can add rough ovals for the eyes and lips. Add a small curved line to place the nose and divide the lip oval with a line. Helpful tip, the bottom lip is a bit thicker than the top.

    STEP: 8

Blocks the shape of hairs and breasts. At this stage, your mermaid will resemble a mannequin. Remember to keep your drawing light. If you are having trouble drawing light lines, you can use a 2H pencil to draw your bottom line.

    STEP: 9

Now that we have the foundation, we can refine our shapes and add details. Identify the eyes, hands, and bra shell. Note that clean lines are darker as opposed to shortened lines.

    STEP: 10

Delete all your unwanted lines. Continue to refine your line art and add a few fish scales for texture. At this stage you have completed your mermaid! If you want to continue working on your drawing, the next step explains some essential pencil shading tips.

Please see the drawing tutorial in the video below

You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below

    Step 1

As we said, a mermaid is a creature with the upper part being human and the lower part being fish. So initially outline the head in an oval shape. Next, draw a smooth long spine on the tail. Next outline the chest and arms.

    Step 2

Let’s add some mass to our mermaid’s body. Outline the intersections on the head. Then, outline the torso narrowing at the waist, then widening at the hips and again slowly narrowing the tail. At the end of this step, outline the arms.

    Step 3

Let’s add some basic details to our mermaid. With the help of slight curves, we outline the contours of the hair. On the face, we outline the eyes, nose and mouth. Next go down right below and draw details on the body and arm. Then draw the fins on the long tail.

    Step 4

Erasing all the unnecessary tutorials from the head, we draw the hair and features of our mermaid’s face. Carefully draw the eyes, eyebrows, nose, ears, and lips.

    Step 5

Let’s go down right below and pay attention to details on the torso and arms. Erase all the unnecessary guides and use clear and precise lines to draw the narrow body around the waist. Next draw thin arms with neat fingers.

    Step 6

Delete all remaining lines from our mermaid’s body. Use clear and slightly curved lines to draw the tail. At the end of this step add the lines on the fins.

    Step 7

With that, the mermaid painting is almost done and we just need to add the shadow. Add gentle shadows. If you do everything correctly, you get a realistic, three-dimensional drawing.

We have completed a drawing lesson on how to draw a mermaid. Note that using this drawing lesson, you’ll be able to draw all mermaids from all the stories you know, whether the character is in Greek mythology or Disney’s Ariel.
