Start by drawing an initial rough sketch of the shark’s body. Artist Terryl Whitlatch said: ‘The body is like a spindle or a tear lying on its side. “This applies to all sharks. The curves of the body create a pivot shape with one end slightly wider than the other. The slightly wider end is the shark’s head and the narrower end is the tail.”
Sharks also have a lateral line that runs from the gills to the end of the tail. It is visible on one side of the body. “The side line is really important when you’re drawing any fish,” says Whitlatch. “It’s the sense organ that helps keep the shark oriented in the water, so it knows what’s up, what’s down and what’s sideways.” Add this element to your drawing to make it as realistic as possible. You can also add a thicker line in various places to add weight to any area of your body.

Step 1:
Start your drawing by drawing a circle in the center of the paper. Use the compass to sharpen but do not press the compass nib to the paper.

Since this fish is similar to a whale, keep in mind the basic makeup of this fish. Draw a curve this way so that it looks like the electricity is vibrating. It is just my perception, you can see the picture. Draw a pointed tail. Later on, the fins will cover this part.

Step 1
To start this tutorial on how to draw a whale, we will start with a simple line that forms the back of the whale. It will be a rather curved line, as you can see in the reference image.
You can see in the following images how this line fits into the rest of the picture.
Step 2
Now draw the whale’s face and tail
We will start building the whale drawing in this next step. Using the line from step 1, use a rounded and curved line on the left side to create the whale’s head.
Then on the right hand side you can draw the forked tail of the whale.
Because of the angle the whale will be at, the tail will be quite small compared to the rest of the body, which will give some perspective.
Step 3
Next, draw the belly and flippers of the whale
Based on what you drew in the previous steps, you can use another curved line near the whale’s belly to create a scale for it.
Once you have drawn the whale, you can draw a line from it to the tail to create the belly for your whale drawing.
Before moving on to the next step, be sure to draw another line to create a large mouth for your whale.
Step 4
Draw an eye and another flipper
In our whale drawing tutorial, you can draw whale eyes. Whales have relatively small eyes compared to the rest of their bodies.
Eyes can be drawn with a small circle with a black dot inside.
Once you have the eyes, you can perform this step by drawing an extra slug next to the eye you drew earlier.
Because this second flip sheet is further away, you can make it a little smaller than the first one.
Step 5
Start adding some details to your whale drawing
We’ll start adding some final details in the next few steps of this tutorial.
First, using the reference image as a guide, you can draw some fine lines into the area below the face and down towards the flippers.
These small lines will give this area, called the abdominal folds, a wrinkled appearance.
Next, you can draw some lines on the face and flippers to add more detail to your whale.
Step 6
Finish the drawing with some final details
We’re almost done with the final step of this whale drawing tutorial! Before the final step, we will add some final details to the drawing.
This is the step where we’ll show you some of the details you can add, but also one where you can really get creative and add some of your own!
For our drawing, we added some small, thin, lines on the tail and body of the whale to make it look more wrinkled.
With the details added, you can now come up with some of your own to add! You have many options to get really creative with it!
For example, you can draw some more sea life around the whale, such as fish, coral, seaweed or anything else you can think of!
Perhaps you could draw the surface of the ocean above the whale and have a boat sailing above it.
That would be a great way to illustrate the size of your whale. What additional details can you think of to add to your whale drawing?
Step 7
Complete your whale drawing with some colors
That brings us to the last step of this tutorial on how to draw hale, and for this tutorial you can let loose and have a lot of fun creating!
We’ve shown you one of the many different ways you can color your own whale drawing, but feel free to use any color you love!
Even if you want a more realistic whale, they come in a wide variety of species and colors
that you will have a lot of options to color your whale. You can even look up some pictures of real whales on the internet for inspiration!
However, if you want a more stylish look, you can use any of your favorite amazing colors to complete your whale.
Once you’ve decided on the colors, the only thing left is to choose your art medium.
I’m going to use some watercolor paint for a softer look to this image, but there’s definitely no right or wrong way to color! You should use whatever artistic medium you want to create a great image.

Step 1:
Body contour sketch

This shark looks a lot more cartoonish than the previous one, and it shows. This pose is dynamic and fun but starts with a slightly more complicated shape to draw.
It is made up of three lines. Start with the longest back line and make sure it’s curved enough that once you add the other two, the body will become seriously bulky. We’re aiming for a healthy shark.
Step 2:
Extra fins, tail and mouth

Now to add the mouth, fins and tail. Note that most of the shapes are more rounded and exaggerated than the previous shark.
The lower fin is drawn to resemble a human arm with bulging biceps, rather than just a simple straight fin.
This is part of a cartoonish drawing style that favors dynamism through exaggeration.
Step 3:
More details

Time to add a few more details. Make sure that the other fin does not cut across the body (unlike the front fin). Doing this will create the perception, the illusion of the shark being a 3-D object.
While sharks don’t have eyebrows and certainly don’t use them for expression, we can put some makeup on for ourselves. After all, drawing is about taking what we see and putting our attraction into it.
The way the eyebrows are slanted and touching the eyes can tell us that the shark is angry and slightly malicious.
Step 4:
Sketch the fins, tail and mouth

Now we begin to track our sharks. Use a thick and soft pencil to do this. First, we draw the “arm” fin, so we know where it cuts across the body.
Next, the mouth – note that we rounded the top lip a bit, not following the sketch.
Finally, we draw the dorsal and tail fins.
You don’t have to draw the shark in this order, but we found it the easiest.
Step 5:

We continue to monitor the rest of the body – back and tail. Finally, we draw what is showing from the hind fin.

Now we trace the last part of our sketch, the eye.
You may have noticed that I added the gills and teeth without outlining them first. They are very simple shapes, so unless you want to find out where they are, you won’t need to draw them first.

Step 1:
Start drawing your cartoon fish with two long curved lines that cut across where the tail will be. Add a shorter curve for the fish’s mouth.
Step 2:
Add a large circle for the eyes, some triangular fins on the sides and bottom and a larger dorsal fin that is almost as long as the caudal fin.
Step 3:
Reshape the outline of the fish to create a stout nose. Draw an pupil for the eyes. Add some curves for the gills. Finish the outline of the tail and add ridges to the fins.
Step 4:
Tweak the fins and fill in the eye leaving a white spot or a highlight.
Step 5:
Draw some curves to indicate the roundness of the body. Space them fairly evenly as they will help you draw fish scales.
Step 6:
Sketch curves for proportions. Mark each row with half the scale.
Step 7:
Ink draw your fish with a pen or marker.
Step 8:
Clean up your sketch in preparation for coloring or painting.
Step 9:
Set your base color for the body. Light green.
Step 10:
Apply base color to the fins and overlay and blend it with the body color. Yellow.
Step 11:
Cover and blend accent colors. Purple.
Cartoon fish
