Native to the tropical forests of Madagascar, the aye-aye is the world’s largest nocturnal primate. This strange-looking lemur, with its large round eyes, narrow snout, giant ears and ruffled fur, is capable of hunting by tapping on tree bark. When it finds a gap, it will gnaw a hole in the wood and insert its long middle finger to pull the holes out. While the more technically correct name long-toed lemur is also used, the species aye-aye has existed since the late 18th century. The name is thought to derive from the local indigenous term for the species. or from a cry of exclamation and excitement (which animals don’t actually make). When threatened or agitated, the long white hairs stand up at the ends, making the black eyes look much larger than they really are.
