The Pink Fairy Armadillo be one of the funnier animal names, but it’s also an accurate way to describe the species. Measuring only about 3.5 to 4.5 inches long, it is the smallest armadillo in the world. It also has pinkish-golden fur that covers most of its body, except for its extended peach claws and saddle-shaped shell. Native to the sandy scrublands of central Argentina, the pink armadillo fairy spends the night hunting for insects hidden underground. One of its nicknames is the sand-swimming fish because it can go through mud as fast as a fish can swim across the sea. Although not enough information is available to determine its conservation status, numbers appear to be declining in its natural range from habitat loss, poaching, and dog attacks. With each passing year, sightings have become rarer.
