BLACKSTARKIDS is a Midwestern trio that straddles the expansive space between hip-hop, emo, and laptop pop, and on “JUNO” it achieves a sort of mesmerism, crammed with too much emotion. suburban summer air into bleached synths and truncated guitar sounds. sounds start to emit their own light. As a song, it’s a song agnostic: You’re going to get a headache trying to make the lines neatly grouped into four groups, and each member’s contribution – a body-heavy rap background, a series of vibrant micro-tones and an emotional chorus, respectively – feel like a self-contained short story, projected from the LiveJournal’s own corner. But as a vibe, its message couldn’t be clearer: Life sucks, but maybe not today.
