Step 1.
Sketch the trunk and branches
Let’s start by defining the trunk and branches in the sketch. For my drawing, I draw inspiration from bonsai trees, that’s why the trunk has a curved shape.
Depending on your needs, you can also define the crown of the plant in this step, which will later be formed by many small flowers. For my drawing, I chose not to do this because to be honest, I’m still not sure how exactly I want to shape the tree crown.
Step 2
Draw the crown of the tree
Since we are drawing a whole tree, we shouldn’t even think about drawing each cherry blossom. Instead, we show the cherry blossoms as clusters of small, isolated strokes, which we can also draw in circles.
It’s best to work our way from light to dark in places, always paying attention to which branches are in the foreground and which are obscured by others.

Once we are satisfied with a position, we can paint scattered green leaves. I recommend painting the branches dark brown only when we are sure what the neighboring points look like and where they start or end. To make the branches look more natural, we could let them peek between the cherry blossoms, but we’d better go sparingly here.
At first, the drawing may look a bit strange. But if we continue to draw patiently and the canopy gets fuller and fuller, it will look a lot more realistic and convincing.
Step 3
Draw branches and trunks
For the branches and trunk, I used a dark brown pencil, HB pencil and precision eraser.
We can draw the branches just below the flowers darker if we want, since the flowers cast shadows on them. However, the further the branches are from the top of the tree, the lighter we can draw them. Before we fill in the branches and trunk with the HB pencil, we can color everything solid with a brown pencil.

Depending on the position of the light source in our drawing, we determine the position of the missing shadows.
In my example drawing, the light is coming from above, so I traced all the lower areas of the branches with the HB pencil to create shadows. Then I used the precision eraser to carefully remove some paint along the top edges of the branches.
I take a similar approach with the trunk and have to say this alternating use of pencil and eraser is great fun and adds a lot of texture to the dark trunk.
Step 4
Drawing background
This last step is optional, as a drawing of a cherry blossom tree can look good without a background.
For my drawing, I decided to use a very subtle background, consisting of simple mountains drawn in gray shades that fade towards the background. This way the tree doesn’t stand in the air, but the background doesn’t get scattered from the tree and the drawing doesn’t look cluttered.
Step 5
Draw the girl under the tree
Sketch a girl’s really long hair who needs a special Japanese girl’s umbrella, sketch her a dress that’s blowing in the wind.
You have completed the drawing.
