You can refer to the simple step-by-step drawing guide below
Step 1
Draw a circle near the top as a guide for Mario’s head. First, draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks with curved lines. Make a light sketch at first to make it easier to erase if you make a mistake. But circles are not necessarily perfect. It is only a guide. If you want a perfectly round shape, trace the outline of a glass, mug, or anything else that’s round.
Step 2
Draw two intersecting lines inside the circle, one horizontal and one vertical. Curve the lines to contour the head. The vertical line should deviate slightly to the right from the center of the circle. The horizontal line should be slightly lower than the middle. These building lines will help you place Mario’s facial features later on.
Step 3
On the left side of the head, draw a C-shaped line to guide Mario’s ears.
Step 4
Draw another circle under the head to guide Mario’s body. This circle should be the same size as the circle for the head. Draw this circle slightly to the right of the head. Don’t draw it directly below. A very small portion of the circle at the top should be at the back of the head.
Step 5
Draw a small circle on the left side of the body to serve as a guide for Mario’s first hand. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the circle for the body. It should be about one-fifth the size. Draw two curved lines connecting the small circle to the torso to form the guide for the first arm.
Step 6
Draw another small circle on the top, right side of the head to serve as a guide for the other hand. This circle should be the same size as the other small circle on the left side of the body. Draw two curved lines, one short and one long, connecting the circle to the body to form the guide for Mario’s other arm.
Step 7
Draw another small circle below the body on the left side to serve as a guide for Mario’s first paw. This circle should be slightly larger than the circle of the hand. Now, draw an arc above the circle and inside the body, as a guide for the rest of the legs. Mark the height of the arc with a small line, then add curved lines on the sides.
Step 8
Draw another circle below the previous one to serve as a guide for the other foot. This circle and the previous circle must be the same size. They should form a type 8 under the body. Draw a long line at the top, right side that connects to the body to form a guide for Mario’s other leg.
Step 9
Draw a long, thin shape near the top of the head for the bill on Mario’s hat. The shape is basically made up of two long parallel lines connected on either side by small arcs. The bill should be close to the top edge of the circle. It should be slightly inclined like a horizontal construction line.
Step 10
Under the hat, draw a few curved shapes as a guide for the eyebrows. Mario’s eyebrows are basically two short, overlapping curves. Do not overlap the brow lines with the lines for the bill of the hat. Eyebrows should be on the back of the bill. Use the vertical construction line as a guide to help you determine the distance between the brows.
Step 11
Draw a curved line in the lower half of the head for Mario’s big nose. Use construction lines as a guide for placement. Sketch lightly at first to get the right shape. The end result should be similar to a wide circle or oval without the top left edge.
Step 12
Draw a long oval under each eyebrow for Mario’s eyes. Sketch lightly at first. Only darken the lines when you put the correct position and shape. The top part of the oval should be behind the eyebrows. The lower part of the right eye should be behind the nose.
Step 13
Inside each eye, draw a smaller oval for the iris. Draw the iris close to the left edge of the eye. The right iris is basically made up of a curved line. Inside each iris, draw an even smaller and thinner oval for Mario’s pupils. Try to draw the pupil right in the center of the iris. Shade the pupils except for a small circle at the top of each pupil to represent glare.
Step 14
Draw Mario’s mustache under his nose using a series of curved lines. First, draw a short line on either side of the nose to define the length of the mustache. Then connect the lines with a row of short curved lines for the bottom part of the mustache. The right curves should be partially hidden by the nose. You will have a total of six small curves that make up Mario’s mustache.
Step 15
Draw Mario’s mouth below the mustache using a series of curved lines. First draw a U-shaped line for the open mouth. Then add a smaller line inside for the tongue. Draw a smaller curved line outside of the mouth on the lower, right side for the bottom lip.
Step 16
Draw a long curved line above the head for the top part of Mario’s hat. First draw a short line above the head to indicate how high the top of the hat will be. Then draw long curved lines on the sides that connect from the sides of the head to the top mark. The line should generally start on the left side above the ear, curve up and to the right and end on the tip of the bill.
Step 17
Draw a curved line right on top of the bill, near the center, for the first part of the logo on Mario’s hat. The shape should be similar to an oval with the bottom part missing.
Step 18
Draw the letter M inside the shape to finish the logo on Mario’s hat. To make the letter M bold, first draw a regular letter M with a short horizontal line on each “leg.” Then draw a smaller letter M under it to make the shape thick and bold.
Step 19
Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the shape of Mario’s face. Follow the basic path of the edge of the circle but draw the line closer to the eye , then curve out again to create the cheek. Sketch lightly at first, and when you get the shape right, darken the lines. Draw an extra curved line under the bottom lip for the chin. Draw the lower, left side of the face but don’t darken the line above the ear.
Step 20
Draw the sideburn under the hat’s bill and next to the ear. The sideburn should go down a bit below the horizontal construction line. The shape is made up of two vertical lines with two short curved lines at the bottom. Draw a line on the right side for the visible portion of Mario’s other sideburn.
Step 21
Darken the C-shaped line on the left to create Mario’s ear. Draw a wavy line similar to the letter 3 inside the ear for the inner strcuture. Add a short line on the right side for the visible portion of the other ear.
Step 22
Use the small circle to the left of the body as a guide to draw Mario’s first hand. First lightly draw a diagonal line across the circle to indicate where the folded fingers will be to form a fist. On the top right edge of the initial circle, draw a curved line for the thumb. Now draw the folded fingers as curved lines up against the diagonal line. The arcs that form the folded fingers should get smaller the lower they are. Follow the basic path of the initial circle and draw a wavy line on the left side to form the knuckles.
Step 23
Draw a curved line within the shape of the initial circle to create the rest of Mario’s hand. This line should go from the thumb to the lowermost folded finger. Add a small line inside for a crease. Darken the initial curved lines on the right to create the shape of the arm.
Step 24
Use the small circle at the top as a guide to draw Mario’s other hand. Draw the thumb on the top, left side as a small circle-like shape. Lightly draw a diagonal line across the circle to indicate where the folded fingers will go. Now draw a series of curved lines up against the diagonal line to form the folded fingers. The pinky should be the smallest finger and the only one that’s not hidden.
Step 25
Follow the edge of the initial circle as you draw a wavy line at the top to create the knuckles. Continue following the path of the circle and add the opening of Mario’s glove at the bottom. Use a couple of curved lines to draw the left side of the palm and the crease inside. Darken the guide lines below the hand to create the shape of the arm.
Step 26
Draw the overalls’ suspenders under Mario’s head using a few lines and circles. First draw a line that goes from the shoulder on the left to the guide for the leg. Then draw a small circle above the guide for the leg as the fastener. Add another line on the left for the other side of the suspender.
Draw the same shape on the upper, right side of the body for Mario’s other suspender. The shape of the suspender is similar to a very long letter U that’s tilted to the left. Draw a small circle at the bottom of the shape for the suspender’s fastener.
Step 27
Use the shapes on the lower, left side of the body as guides to draw the first leg. Darken the arc to create the shape of Mario’s knee and leg. Darken the top half of the circle to create the pants cuff and front of the shoe. Draw two curved, parallel lines across the circle to create the bottom edge of the shoe. Darken the bottom half of the initial circle but make the shape
Color your Mario drawings with crayons, markers or even crayons! Use dark red or light brown to create shadows on the sides of the hat and shirt. Then use red on top. You can also omit the shadow and just use red for a simpler drawing.
