South Park is an American animated comedy-drama series created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and developed by Brian Graden for the Comedy Central television channel. The film revolves around four boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick—and their situations in the town of South Park, Colorado. The film is known for its use of profanity and for its black comedy, surreal humor with satirical content on a variety of topics aimed at a mature audience.
Parker and Stone developed the film from the short film The Spirit of Christmas, which consists of two different short videos. One of the short videos above became one of the first viral videos on the Internet, sparking the production of South Park. The pilot episode was produced using the paper cut method, and since then all episodes have been produced on computer simulations of the paper cutting method. South Park features a large cast of recurring characters.
Since its premiere on August 13, 1997, 309 episodes of South Park have aired. The series debuted with great success when it continuously received the highest rating points compared to other basic cable TV programs. Subsequent episodes were somewhat unstable like the original, but this is still one of Comedy Central’s highest-rated shows. Since 2000, each episode has been written and produced in the week leading up to its broadcast, with Parker being the screenwriter and lead director. The twenty-third season opened on September 25, 2019.
South Park has received numerous accolades, including five Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and is on many publishers’ greatest TV show lists. Theatrical film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut premiered in June 1999 and was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for an Academy Award. In 2013, TV Guide ranked South Park as the greatest animated television series of all time.
