Step 1
Once you’ve learned the fundamentals and sequence of drawing, you’ll be able to sketch and draw literally anything.
Step 2
Sketch these two weird looking noodles as you see in the picture. They represent the head and body of Donald Duck.
Step 3
Draw them in the same or similar proportions to each other to keep the body posture balanced.
Step 4
Sketch a light center guide along with both noodles.
Step 5
Sketch the hand (wing). Notice that each hand (wing) looks like a half crescent moon.
Step 6
Here we start adding more detailed body parts sketches.
Sketch hands, outline face contours and more

Step 1:
Draw your rooster’s chest
If you’ve followed our rooster drawing tutorial, you can expect us to start drawing this rooster in a similar way. However, there is a big difference in the stature of chickens and roosters. Roosters tend to stand much taller and straighter than chickens, and we will begin to reflect this difference in this first step.
Before you put pen to paper, make sure you draw this first construction line in the center of your canvas. It is also important to ensure that there is plenty of room on all sides of this first building shape for all other elements of the rooster’s body.
For the chest part of the rooster, you want to create a large vertical oval. This oval is quite long and narrow, like an elongated egg.
Step 2:
Main body construction
Now that we have constructed the rooster’s chest and neck area, it’s time to turn our attention to the main body shape. The main body of the rooster slopes slightly down towards the bottom left corner of the canvas.
To create this effect, draw a slightly fatter oval that overlaps the bottom half of the chest oval and slopes down towards the left corner of the canvas.
Step 3:
Create the shape of the tail
Roosters are known for their large and gorgeous tail feathers, and in this third step we’ll be using another large oval building shape to help us outline the tail. The oval of the tail should be roughly the same as the oval of the main body. The tail construction shape should start at the bottom of the main body oval and should be slightly upward.
At the end of this step, your rooster drawing should look like the example below.
Step 4:
Sketch of the rooster’s head
So far all the building shapes we’ve used have been large ovals. Now it’s time to take another turn and use a small circle to represent the hooves of the rooster’s head. The head should be slightly forward of the top point of the oval at the chest and should also just touch the top slightly.
Tip: Keep some space between head and chest as we will be adding Wattle below the head soon.
Step 5:
Give your rooster a comb
In this step, we will arrange the building shape for the comb on the top of the rooster’s head. This bright red and fleshy appendage is characteristic of roosters, and the bigger the rooster, the stronger and more impressive the rooster will be. Starting at the top of the head circle, draw the rooster’s comb freehand, making indents and curved tops.
You can connect the other end of the comb to the front of the rooster’s face, where you imagine the top of the beak.
Step 6:
Draw Wattle
You’ll be doing two things very quickly in this step. The first thing you will do is draw the cock’s beak, starting at the front line of the comb, and after reaching a pointed end, bending back and down to join the beak. In our final build steps, we’ll use some simple lines to create the basic shape of the rooster’s legs and feet. Starting at the bottom of the last shape you drew, draw a line going down and then curving towards the left side of the canvas in an “L” shape. Repeat this step to draw the second leg, then draw three more lines on the leg closest to us. The first additional line should be at the base of the “L” and the other two should be at the back of the leg, with the highest line being very short.
For the second leg, you can only add the trail above this.
Step 9:
Draw the final sketch of your rooster drawing
When you decided that you wanted to create a drawing of a rooster, you probably didn’t envision all the construction steps we just went through. However, now that we have these building shapes, you’ll see how easy it is to create the final, perfectly proportioned outline of your rooster drawing.
Using all the construction lines, you will shape the final contour of your rooster drawing. Starting at the top, outline the head and the tip, bring the tip a little above the head and add a dividing line at the beak. You can also add an eye to the head, which is made up of concentric circles. Behind the comb, add some lining feather details.
Continue sketching the rest of the rooster’s body, following the building shapes fairly closely but make sure you include some variation to create a smooth and natural shape.
In several places around the body, including the back of the neck, around the top of the chest, and on the top of the tail, you can use short strokes to give the impression of contouring. On the tail area, create a line of feathers of different sizes and shapes around the lower part of the build shape. Some of these feathers may be pointed or smooth, and they should overlap slightly.
Once you get to the legs and feet, use the construction lines as your midpoints and outline them on the sides. Add spiky nail details to the tips of each toe and for a complete finish you can add a curved line inside the main body to represent the rooster wings.
Step 10:
More feather detail and texture
When you first look at the example below, you may be overwhelmed by the sudden amount of detail, but we promise this step is simpler than it appears. Start at your rooster’s head, and use small dots and lines to add texture to the comb and feathers. Next, following the curve of the rooster’s body, continue from the top and down to the next using small lines to give the impression of feather details.
As you go deeper into the main body, these lines will get longer and longer. Draw lines one by one and make sure they don’t overlap for the most realistic look.
Once you get to the wing line on the main body, you can start using short lines to create a larger feather shape and continue adding contour details to the large tail feathers. Draw a center line through each of these large feathers and then add small strokes on the sides. To complete this step, fill in the center of the eye with black, and use small circles and incomplete doodles to add texture to the rooster’s legs and feet.
Step 11:
Color the background layer
Our drawing of a rooster includes a range of different colors in different parts of the body. The best way to build up each of these colors and keep them alive and true is to build up the color gradually. The first color that we will use is a light ocher. Using this color you can paint in the head, neck and upper body of the rooster.
Remember to leave the rooster’s face, chest, wings, bottom and tail blank as they will have different colors.
Step 12:
Coloring Comb and Wattle
For this step, use a small brush and paint a light pink or ruby shade to color in the comb, ledge, and face of your rooster painting. In the following steps we will add highlights and shadows to this area of your rooster canvas.
Step 13:
Add a second coat of color paint
Although the name of this step indicates that we are only adding one more color in this step, we are actually using three different colors to complete the basic shades for the entire body of the rooster drawing. your. Start by using a navy blue shade to color all the remaining bare parts of the rooster’s chest area. Next, for the tail feathers, look for a dark green-green color to color them all evenly.
Finally, you can use light pink or beige to color the legs and feet of the rooster drawing.
Step 14:
Using Highlights and Shadows to Add Depth
In this step we will use shadows and highlights to add a sense of depth and realistic texture to some parts of our rooster drawing. Start by using a soft brush and a bit of white paint to create small highlights on the basket, comb and your rooster’s face, focusing the white paint on the areas that can catch the light. naturally.

Step 1:
Draw the shape of the main body
The first building shape we are using in this tutorial is a large oval that is oblong and slightly sloping. You want to make sure that the left side of the oval is slightly higher than the right side, since the duck body is tilted. If you’re using physical media instead of a tablet, we also recommend using a very light pencil for construction lines so you can easily erase them later.
In this first step, make sure that the oval of the main body is in the center of your canvas and that there is plenty of room on all sides for the rest of the duck’s body.
Step 2:
Create the base of the wing
The oval is definitely the most common building shape and we use different sizes to create different elements of our duck sketch. For the base of the wing, you can draw a much narrower oval that overlaps the main body oval significantly.
The duck’s wings protrude slightly above the tail, so you want the end of the wing-building circle to extend slightly behind the oval of the main body.
Step 3:
Positioning Duck’s Head
Ducks have a very round head, so we will use a small circle as the base shape. Find the point on the oval of the main body where the wings begin to overlap. Now draw small circle just above this point.
Ducks have a fairly short neck, so you don’t want the head to be too far from the body.
Step 4:
Draw the beak in your duck drawing
This step is very simple and quick. Using a very long “U” shape, draw a beak pointing slightly down from the front of the head.
Step 5:
Connect head and body with neckline
Now it’s time to piece together the body and head of your duck sketch by drawing on the neck. Using two lines, you want to create a seamless and smooth connection between the head and body. Start at the bottom of the head circle, and draw a curved line back and then around the front of the main body oval. For the remaining neckline, draw a curved line from the back of the head down to the oval of the body.
Step 6:
Create the base for the legs and feet
For your legs and feet to be easy to draw, you can use single lines to draw them out. Most of the build lines you’ve drawn so far are shapes, but the legs and feet require more freeform lines. Starting at the midpoint of the underside of the main body, draw two separate lines flowing down and forward. On top of each of these lines, create three toes.
The hind leg line should be significantly shorter than the front one. This difference is due to the perspective of our drawing, where the line behind us is further away and therefore appears to be shorter.
Step 7:
Shaping the head and tail
The shape of the duck’s tail is very iconic, so this is another very easy step to complete. Starting at the point where the main body and wings meet on the duck’s back, draw a small curved tail and end on the underside of the main body oval.
Step 8:
Create the final outline of your duck drawing
Now it’s time to create the final outline of your duck drawing. Using all the building shapes you’ve drawn so far, you can sketch out the head, torso, and wings as well as draw some details on the face.
Starting from scratch, follow the construction lines pretty closely. For the beak, add a small curved line at the base to separate it from the rest of the head and create a line inside the beak to show the two halves. Now you can add a small nostril near the top of the beak and add a circular eye inside the head.
When it comes to contouring the neck and most of the body, you can follow the build lines very closely.
For the wings, you could dip your outline a bit below the build shape, adding a few points at the end and a line at the top. For the outline of the tail, you can add a few additional hairs. Use the leg and foot building lines as the center point for your contour. Remember to add curves between the feet to create the fabric. You can complete the foot by adding small claw details to each toe.
Step 9:
More feather detail
In this step, you will use a bunch of different texture lines and dots to create the impression of realistic feathers. Start by adding details to the mine, including some fine lines around the bottom of the mine. You can also color in the nostrils and add some shadow to the tip of the nose. You can continue to paint over the top of your easy duck drawing, adding small dots and lines around the beak and down the neck where the shadows fall naturally. While you’re working on the head, you can color a part of the eye and add some shading around it.
To make your texture as realistic as possible, you should follow the shape of your body when adding duck feather textures.
For the body of the duck sketch, you can create separation between the chest and the rest of the body with a small line. On the chest, your hair lines will flow down in a curved shape. On the rest of the body and wings, you can follow the shape of the duck using slightly longer lines. You can leave the head and tail and the legs and feet blank.
Step 10:
Time for color
Mallard ducks have very iconic colors and the best way to achieve realistic colors for any drawing is to build up different shades gradually. The first color that we will use for our duck painting is light gray. You can apply this shade over the whole duck body.
Step 11:
Apply a second layer of color
The second color you will add to your duck sketch is light brown. To get the difference in shade you can see below, you’ll apply two layers of brown in different areas. Use a medium brush to paint the nipples, upper back and lower wings brown.
The front part of the duck’s breast should be lighter than all other brown areas. For such a look, apply a second coat of light brown over all other brown areas.
Step 12:
Color the head bright green
There are two different colors that you will use in this step to create the signature iridescent green top. These two shades are light green and a cool purple shade. Start by coloring the entire head with your light green color. Then you can take a soft brush and mix the purple and green paint around the edges of the tip. Use an inward motion to blend the two shades together.
Concentrate quite a bit of purple just below the head in the neck area. Shadows will naturally fall in this area and purple is a great shader.
Step 13:
Color the paws and beak
Start this step with yellow and color the entire beak. You can then use a light brown shade to add shadow and contour to the beak. For the propeller, look for orange red and color the paw completely. You can complete the foot by adding a second layer of white highlighter on the forefoot and forefoot.
Step 14:
Shading and highlighting your duck drawing
Highlights and shadows are essential to creating realistic color and size. Start highlighting by using white shadows to add highlights all over the main body of the duck. Make sure your strokes follow the texture lines for more realism. You can also add a pop of white to the neck and add a little sparkle to the duck’s eyes.
To create shadows, use a soft brush to add a light coat of black paint to the bottom of the wings, around the bottom of the duck’s belly, and the entire tail.

The final step is optional, but removing the outlines will create a more seamless and realistic drawing. The best way to remove borders is to mark them with the corresponding color. Continue the top line of the back triangle to make the top of the head. Curl it up and then back down, like a boomerang. Draw a small eye just to the left of the top bump of the head. Then continue the lower triangular line back to form a short neckline.
Step 3
Curve the neck down and to the right to form the abdomen. Continue the first line down to start the following line.
Step 4
Starting at the end of that line draw wings. It starts wide, curves to the side and goes to a sharp point. Continue the straight line back to the left and curl up and down the top part of the wing.
Step 5
Now continue with the belly line to draw the buttocks. Turn the line upside down and draw a short pointed tail right behind the top of the wing. Add a webbed foot to the bottom of the abdominal tract.
Step 6
Add another long, thin foot right above the first foot.
