Step 1
Basic head shape:
Start by lightly sketching the basic shape of the head. These are usually oval or egg shaped. Make sure that the top is proportional to the size of the paper and the rest of the features.
Step 2
Facial care instructions:
Draw a vertical line down the middle of your head to help you align your facial features. Then, draw a horizontal line down the middle to mark eye level.
Step 3
Eye:
Place your eyes along the horizontal line. Two eyes are usually the same width as one eye. Pay attention to the shape of the eyes and the distance between them.
Step 4
Nose and mouth:
Place the nose below the eyes and the mouth below the nose. Use your reference images to get the correct proportions and shapes of these features.

Ears:
Draw ears on both sides of the head, about halfway between the eyes and the bottom of the nose.
Step 6
Hair:

Step 1
Start with two shapes. One for the head and one for the body. Once that’s done, you can sketch out the facial guidelines.
Step 2
Start drawing the shape of the head and then the smooth cheeks. Once that is done, you should be ready for the next step.
Step 3
Cover the bottom part of the figure to complete the structure of the face and head. Add feather lines to create the typical vampire spot on the forehead and then draw Bunnicula’s ears.
Step 4
Create large ovals for the eyes and then draw the nose and mouth. Don’t forget those fangs.

Step 1
Start outlining the actual rose by sketching the rose center of the flower. Use overlapping curves to create irregular spirals. From this top, extend a series of overlapping curves to outline the tops of the petals.
Step 2
Draw “Y” shaped curves below the center of the beautiful rose. Then draw more branching curves from these lines. This outlines the tops of the many petals.
Step 3
Draw curved lines that meet at points facing inward or outward at the top of the flower. Allow the lines to connect and reach the top of the rosebud. This outlines more petal tips.
Step 4
Draw another “Y” shaped curve below the flower, connecting with the petals on both sides. On one side, extend a curved line from the top of the petal and wrap around the flower.
Step 5
Draw long wavy lines on each side of the flower. Beneath one petal, draw a long, narrow “Y” shaped line.
Step 6
Draw the large, concave ends of the outer petals. Use long curved lines and duplicate them back.
Step 7
Draw more petals at the top of the flower, using long, curved lines for each petal. Fill in the edges of the petals visible at the edges of the flower, using vertical curved lines.
Step 8
Draw another outer petal. Use overlapping curves. Then extend a pair of curved lines below the lowest petal and let them meet at a sharp point. This will become one of the sepals or small leaves at the base of the flower.
Step 9
Complete your actual rose outline by extending two pairs of lines below the flower and allowing each pair to meet at points, forming the remaining sepals.
Then extend a pair of parallel vertical lines. This represents the beautiful flower stem. Along the edge of the stem, enclose a small curved rectangle to represent the thorn.

Step 1
Start by drawing a long, curved line that looks like an upside-down “L”. This line forms one of the rock faces from which your waterfall flows.
Step 2
Draw a short curved line extending from the top of the rock face. Then, from this line, draw a long curved line. You have just sketched the flow of water over your waterfall.
Step 3
Add detail and texture of the water flowing into the waterfall. Draw long and short curved lines of different sizes along the length of the waterfall. At the bottom of the waterfall, draw some curved, wavy lines in a circle. These lines represent the turbulence that occurs when fast-moving water meets the rocks at the bottom of the falls.
Step 4
Draw some rocks at the bottom of the waterfall. For each rock, surround an irregular shape with a curved line.
Step 5
Delete the guide lines if necessary.
Step 6
The plant likes to grow in moist places at the bottom of waterfalls. Draw them! First, use a series of many small, interconnected, “U” shaped lines to outline the shrub. Notice how the outline of the bush is not only round, but also undulating and wavy. Then texture the bush by drawing a series of curved lines, joined together, a “U” shape inside it.
Step 7
Draw the rock face on the opposite side of the waterfall using some long, curved lines that are joined together.
Step 8
Draw more water splashes and ripples at the bottom of the waterfall. Draw a wavy line to represent the turbulence at the bottom and draw more wavy lines around the circles drawn in the previous steps. Surrounds a number of teardrop shapes, representing splashes of water from the falls.
Step 9
Add the final details to your landscape. Draw a long curved line at the top of the waterfall and include additional teardrop shapes along its length. Draw jagged, wavy lines along the rock face to give it a rough texture.

Step 1:
Belly shaping
When it comes to using a construction line, it’s always best to start with the largest part of the animal’s body. So, for our bee drawing, we’ll start by building the belly. For the abdomen, use a long and rather narrow oval to show this part of the bee. The oval should be diagonally angled and slightly off-center on your canvas as we will be drawing the rest of the bee to the left of this belly.
The most important thing to consider in this first step is to make sure that there is plenty of space around this build step so that you don’t end up with a slightly flattened bee.
Step 2:
Draw your bee chest
For the chest part of the bee, you will use a large circle. This circle should overlap slightly with the belly oval and its top should be slightly above the highest point of the abdomen.
In terms of positioning, the chest circle should be in the center of your canvas.
Step 3:
Outline the shape of the head
The first part of our bee drawing is long and narrow, so to create it we will use a small and narrow oval. The oval of the head should be slightly tilted towards the back of the canvas.
Again, the oval of the head should slightly coincide with the roundness of the chest.
Step 4:
More bee proboscis
Bees are the most important pollinators in our ecosystem and they do this by rubbing pollen while sucking nectar out of flowers. To suck up this sweet nectar, bees use their pointed proboscis, which is what we’ll be drawing in this step.
Using a slightly curved “V” shape, attach the mouth to your bee drawing at the bottom point of the oval on top.
Step 5:
Sketch of a bee’s antennae
As we continue to focus on the build, we’ll move on to laying out the basic shape of the bee’s whiskers. Using two simple curves, attach the antennae to the left side of the bee’s head, just below the midpoint.
To capture a realistic view, the top antenna must start in an oval at the top and should be significantly longer than the other. The lower antenna can extend almost directly down from one side of the oval on the top and should be much shorter.
Step 6:
Sketch your bee wings
For the wings of the bee, you will use two long ovals. Start with the upper wing significantly narrower than the other and must begin and end at the upper point of the chest circle. For the second wing, you can use a slightly larger and thicker oval that starts in the chest circle.
The position and size of these two wings are essential to capture the true perspective of your simple bee drawing.
Step 7:
Lay the foundation of the front foot
Bees, like most insects, have segmented legs like their segmented bodies. Start by drawing the front leg closest to us from our point of view. Start by drawing a sausage-like shape extending down from the chest circle just behind the intersection of the head and thorax. At the bottom of this sausage, draw another “S” shaped sausage that curves forward at the bottom.
The second front leg is almost hidden behind the head, so we’ll just draw the curvier bottom protruding from the head oval just below the mouth.
Step 8:
Crafting the middle leg
Bees, like other insects, have six legs, two in the front, two in the middle, and two in the back. Now it’s time to build the middle legs extending from the chest circle. Start with the middle leg closest to the front of the body and extend from the center of the bottom line of the chest circle. This leg is the furthest from our view, so it should look like the second front leg we drew in the previous step.
For the larger of the two middle legs, you can use the same pattern as for the large front foot, but this foot should be slightly toward the back of the tarp.
Step 9:
Outline the hind legs
The hind legs are the largest and begin inside the abdomen. Overlap the back belly draw both legs at an angle that join together at the base. The back leg should be much larger than all the other pins you’ve drawn so far and should end in a pointed curve.
At the end of this step, your drawing should look like our example below.
Step 10:
Draw eyes for your bee
The bee has very large eyes, only slightly smaller than the oval at the top. In the head oval, draw a slightly smaller oval, slightly more vertical than the head.
Step 11:
Pollen Ball Sketch
To make our drawing of the bee as realistic as possible, we will draw a pollen ball. Pollen is usually concentrated on the large hind legs, so on the largest part of this leg, draw an angled oval.
Step 12:
Draw the final outline of your bee sketch
Now that we’ve created our bee, we can use these lines to create the final outline of our simple bee drawing. For the most part, you can follow the construction lines closely. Start with beard, use c
The road is built as the mid lane. You can then outline the bee’s head, making it a bit more pointed towards the mouth. When outlining the top and back of the bee’s head, use short feather strokes to give the impression of plumage, as bees have a soft appearance.
You can continue to outline the rest of the bee’s body using these short hair lines. You can also create some sections on the chest and belly with this fur texture.
Use smooth lines to create the shape of the wings and you can outline the belly with a straight line, bringing the bottom in a small spot. The legs should also be outlined with straight lines and you don’t need to draw along the segmented line but remember to make the lines narrower at these joints to maintain the segments.
After completing this step, you are ready to delete any construction lines that are still visible.
Step 13:
Create textures and fur details
In the last step before adding color, we will add fur textures and other details to our bee sketch. Start by using short lines to create a segmented texture for the wings. These freeline patterns are subject to the direction and angle of the wing. While you are working on the wing, you can add some small dots and blobs of color to the base of the wing to create more depth.
Next, move up to your bee’s chest, using feather strokes to create texture. These feathers will extend outward from the base of the largest wing. Continue to fill the rest of the bee’s body with these lines, carefully following the shape of each segment.
Once you get to the belly, you can start using these short lines to create signature striped patterns. For the head, the hair lines should extend into a few loops around the eyes. You can also add some more shadow to the beard and do the same for the legs. These areas on the legs will be painted black in our coloring steps. To finish off the detail drawing, add a few squiggly lines to the anther, creating a bumpy texture.
Step 14:
Spread the first layer of color paint
For the base color paint, you will use a single layer of yellow to paint the entire body of the bee except for the wings.
No matter what medium you’re using, make sure the base coat is smooth and consistent.
Step 15:
Coloring Bee Wings
For the wings, we will use light beige as the background. Use a fine brush to create a smooth and consistent coating of color, making sure not to make it too dark.
Step 16:
Draw the details in black
The second most prominent color in bees is black. In this step, take a black color and smooth brush, and color in the parts of the bee that are blackest.
Add this shadow to the beard, eyes and legs.
Step 17:
Add dimension with shadows and highlights
You can immediately see that there is a significant difference between the previous step and this step, but don’t be too surprised. This difference is because the shadow adds dimension and creates the right perspective. Start by using a bit of white paint and a soft brush to lighten the neck area that separates the bee’s head and thorax. You can do the same at the split between the chest and abdomen.
While you’re using the white paint, add a bit of a lightly blended highlighter to the top of the bee’s eyes and create a very light “U” shaped reflection along the lower part of the bee’s curve. eye.
Now is the time to focus on the darkness. Use a small but soft brush to add black shadows to the bristles around the bee’s head. Concentrate black specifically on parts of the head and body that would be naturally hidden from light, including the underside of the neck and just behind the highlight separating the head and thorax. As you move to the belly of the bee drawing, use the black shadow to create alternating black and yellow lines.
To get the smoothest possible blend, dab your brush lightly on the canvas and gently apply it in place.
Step 18:
Add yellow highlights
In this step we will use yellow and white to create some more highlights along the antennae and legs of your bee drawing. It’s up to you where you want to focus your light, but it’s best to consider where natural light will hit the bee and use that to guide your lighting choices. One place we recommend adding highlights is on the articulation areas between the leg segments. This prominent placement will emphasize the bifurcation of the bee’s legs.

Step 19:
Mixing colors in wings
To blend the color of the wings and make them appear more opaque, you would use a dark brown. Start by focusing a light dark brown color along the wing bones that are attached to the main body of the bee. You can then continue to blend this shadow gently into the wings, concentrating most of the shadow along the bottom edge of the largest wing and

For the smaller wing, blend a darker shadow along the top segment as shown in our example below, again ensuring that the color blends into the lighter shade as you go up the wing.

Step 20:
More finishing steps
The last step in this tutorial is optional, but it’s a lovely way to create a smooth and seamless bee drawing. You just want to remove all the contours in your bee artboard by filling them with the corresponding color of the area.

Step 1.
Draw head and body
Draw a large oval for the body and a smaller circle for the head.
Right now, it looks like a giant egg, but we’ll fix that. We will add the tail and footer on the next page.
Step 2.
Add tail and legs
Add a thick and curved shape like pasta for the tail. Draw another rounded triangle to form the club at the end of the tail. Place two more shapes as shown to form the legs behind the body.
Step 3.
Draw legs
The proximal legs of Ankylosaurus were formed by drawing one upper leg and one lower leg. These shapes will overlap slightly, as seen on the mesh. Make the bottom shapes bulge out at the bottom to form the feet.
Our dinosaur is starting to take shape. We will add spikes and claws on the next page.
Step 4.
Extra Thorns and Claws
Draw four teardrop shapes on each paw for claws. Add more tears along the tail for spikes.
Step 5.
Added face and armor
Draw triangles along the side of the body to begin forming the upper armor. Add more triangles on top for spikes. Split head to separate mouth and lower jaw. Draw circles for the eyes and eye sockets. Place a teardrop shape near the front of the face to make the nostrils.
Step 6.
More armor
Draw curves on the back and head of Ankylosaurus. This provides a grid to show how the armor spikes are arranged.
This dinosaur needs more armor! We will continue our work on the next page.
Step 7.
Draw spikes on armor
Draw the armor spikes by following the instructions of the grid. Add detailed lines on legs, belly and tail.
Step 8.
Add the final touches
Trace the pencil lines you want to keep with a marker and erase any excess. Ankylosaurus is now ready to color.
Your dinosaur is done! Even if you don’t get it right the first time, keep practicing until you’re satisfied with your drawing.

Don’t worry if your lines overlap the flowers. These lines are guidelines to follow in drawing your final lines.
Step 3.
End of petals
Show that the petals curve upwards by drawing a second, irregular curve inside the first. At the bottom of each cup, draw a curved line to show the petals overlapping the cup.
Give each cup a wavy edge by drawing a curved oval.
Step 4.
Stems and Leaves
Draw two small teardrop shapes in each cup to make the center of the flower. To show the grooves on the petals, lightly draw two curved lines along the center.
Redraw the lines for the stem and leaves, making sure that your lines don’t go into the flower.
Step 5.
Details and shadows
Shade each leaf using long, curved lines parallel to the sides of the leaf. Shade one side of each stem with short diagonal lines. Shade the petals and cups with lines of different lengths.
Finally, color. You can use watercolors or colored pencils.

Step 1
Draw a square for the cockpit section of the steam engine. To the left of the cabin, add a long rectangle with a curved front. Sketch a long rectangle (slotted in the back) for the bottom part.
Step 2
Draw two halves of curved ovals on the front part to create the bell. Sketch a curved rectangle to form the hood. Add a rectangle in front of the engine to create the chimney. Draw other rectangular details on the side. Add a curved wedge in front.
Step 3
Just above the wedge, draw a slightly angled rectangle. Draw two rectangles for the cab window. Add more rectangles for details on the engine side. Draw a small curved rectangle at the bottom of each bell. Add a dome at the front of the car and at the top of the chimney. Add rectangles in the back to create a device that links the carriages together.
Step 4
Draw four wheels – three large in the back and one smaller in the front. Sketch three curved rods on the boiler section to add detail. Add a diamond on the side of the cabin and a few other rectangular details. Sketch a half oval on the link unit at the back of the car.
Step 5
Add slats to the front cabin windows and a square for the rear window. Sketch the siren coming from the bell closest to the cab. Draw a rectangle between the front and rear wheels and some other details next to the wheel to start creating the pistons. Add a wedge on the spoon and a rectangle in front of the car. Add a few cubes to the details on the side of the engine.
Step 6
Sketch some long, thin rectangles to complete the pistons, roof, and structural details on the engine side.
Step 7
Trace the pencil lines you want to keep with a marker. Remove any extra lines. Use a clean eraser to remove the pencil lines. This helps to avoid pencil marks on the paper.

Step 1. Draw the outline

Draw eyebrows with short curves. Use two small ovals with pointed ends for the eyes. Outline the nose with straight lines. Draw the mouth with curved lines as shown. Outline the hair with long curves. Shape the helmet using zigzag lines.
Add a small curve to the neck. Draw a U shape for the neckline. Form the flowers in the bouquet with strange round and oval shapes. Add some pleats on the bottom of the skirt to make the hem uneven.
Step 4. Add details to the outfit
Add the veil with curly lines. Helmet detail with squiggles. Sketch straight and curved lines for the stand collar. Add more curves to show the wrinkles on the dress. Draw two oval lines to define the bodice. Use exotic shapes and lines for the flowers.
Step 5. Finish the drawing
Finish the hair with squiggly lines. Add lace to hats and skirts with curls as shown. Draw diagonal lines on the veil to create a texture. Add some small circles on the veil for beading.

Draw the basic structure of the farmhouse using the rules of perspective and vanishing points. Draw an X from corner to corner of the center and right vertical line. Draw a vertical line through the center to indicate the location of the roof top. Connect the end of this line to the point on the left to establish the top of the roof.
Use two diagonal lines to connect the roof line to the side of the house. Draw a diagonal line to connect the top of the roof to the side of the house. Use the rules to draw lines parallel to the base of the building for the foundation. Draw another set of lines around the bottom of the roof.
Step 2. Sketch the structure
Set the position of the chimney using the vanishing point rules. Sketch windows, garage doors, and doors using the rules for drawing lines parallel to the basic structure. Sketch two windows on the front of the house and two windows on the side of the house.
Step 3. Doors and Windows
Use intersecting vertical and horizontal lines to detail the windows. Set up the garage door with vertical and horizontal lines. Detail of doors with five rectangles. Add stairs with rectangles and lines. Form bushes with curly lines. Add lights in front of the house as shown.
Step 4. Take sides
Using the vanishing points rules, draw evenly spaced lines around the front and side faces of the house. Sketch a diagonal line on the underside of the roof on the right side. Add a dot and a short curve for the garage opener and straight lines for the driveway. Draw a dashed line under the bush to show the ground.
Step 5. Final Details
Use vertical and horizontal lines to complete the chimney. Roof detail with straight lines. Draw the shutters with horizontal lines. Add a door handle to the entrance door. Finish the bushes with squiggles.

Step 1. Outline
Draw three connected rectangles, with the middle rectangle being larger than the others. Outline two diagonal lines in each center crossing. Find the vertices of the bell tower by drawing vertical lines through the center of each X.
Extend these vertical lines past the vertices of the rectangle. Draw a triangle and a rectangle on the left rectangle and a triangle on both the center and right rectangles. Extend a line through the center of the middle triangle.
Step 2. Turret and foundation
Divide each triangle into quarters with lines starting at the vertex. Draw a horizontal line on the central triangle to form a cross. Add V shapes and lines to the left triangle to form the turret.
Define the surface with double horizontal lines as shown. Extend two short diagonal lines from the bottom corners of the building. Connect them with a horizontal line.
Step 3. Column
Add columns with single, double and triple vertical lines. The top of the columns have an odd U-shape. Draw a long line and a short line under the turret. Add two vertical lines under the right steeple. Sketch a horizontal line through the lower left columns.
Step 4. Dome
On the left hand side of the cathedral, draw double domes. End the diagonal with a short vertical line. Sketch the double arches on the central part of the building. Detail them with curves. Add a wheel shape with spokes in the center and add curly lines underneath. Top with a V shape.
On the right hand side of the cathedral, draw a double arch and two sets of arches with eccentric tops. Add U-shaped lines to two of them. Sketch a zigzag line for the ground behind the church. Finish the steps with long horizontal lines with the ends pointing downwards.
Step 5. Shade
Cover the roof with diagonal lines and the windows with diagonal lines. Add a connecting half circle to the front of the church.

Step 1
Draw the head
Start drawing by sketching the entire head shape (including the ears). Doing so will give you a better estimate of the volume of your hair. It can also help you avoid making mistakes.
Step 2
Draw the hairline
Some distance forming the top of the head draws the hairline. This again helps to avoid any potential mistakes like having gaps between different curls growing too far on the head.
Step 3
Draw the outline of the hair
On top of the head artboard, add an outline of the main hair shape/shape. At this stage, don’t worry about picking up small curls but instead focus on the overall volume and large shape to define the hairstyle.
Medium length hair like in this example will tend to “hug” to the face. Which means it will curve towards China and it will go down.
To prevent your drawing from becoming too messy, erase the ends that are covered by the hair once you’re done. You can also erase the hairline.
Step 4
Add some details
Gradually add smaller folds and curls to better define its shape. You can erase parts of the border from the previous step if needed.
Step 5
Finish drawing lines
In the end, you will have a line drawing with many details similar to the example above.

All of the examples in this tutorial will use fairly general lighting without a particularly strong unidirectional light source.
The main goal of this step is to apply an initial layer of shadow to define the light, medium and dark areas of the hair.
Try creating shadows in such a way that they flow along different curls and folds. Also, try to keep your strokes a bit visible (don’t blend them too much) to create the effect of each strand of hair as you shade.
Be careful not to press the pencil too hard as you’ll want to darken your shadows to avoid mistakes such as making mid-tone (light gray) areas too dark compared to the shadow areas.
Step 7
Enhance the ball
Refine shadows by creating smoother gradients between neutral, light, and “in the dark” areas of your hair. You can also make the shadows a little darker.
Step 8
Finished hair drawing
Darken the overall drawing until you have a good balance between the different hair areas. Make sure to keep highlights and mid-tones visible by leaving some space between them.
Once done, you can do some quick pencil strokes on top of the different clumps to create the look of each strand. Do this by first pressing harder on the pencil and then quickly pulling it out of the paper. These can help make hair look softer and more natural.

Step 1:
Draw the basic shape of the grasshopperWe want to start with a very light grasshopper sketch. We do this by drawing the general shapes of the head, thorax and abdomen of the grasshopper. First, we want to establish the general shape and shape of the insect.
The initial goal was to work with both a pencil and an eraser, gradually figuring out how the arrangement and proportions of the three main aspects of the grasshopper fit together. We will see that the thorax in the middle is about the same size as the locust’s head.

Starting with the first part, we wanted to learn about the grasshopper, slowly refining the grasshopper sketch and adding more details.
A good suggestion is to look at a diagram of a grasshopper, which you can easily find on the internet. This way you can see how the different components of the grasshopper are put together. We wanted to make sure we went through each aspect of the grasshopper, slowly refining the details.
As you go from the head to the back of the abdomen, you want to consider how large the eye is placed in the head or how many breathing holes in the abdomen. Take your time with each section, slowly working with your eraser and pencil to capture the best details possible.
As for the two sets of forelimbs, both attach to the thorax and are smaller than the locust’s hind femur. The posterior femur is located more in the higher abdomen and is significantly larger. The front legs also spread out in a lateral fashion, helping the grasshopper stabilize. The hind legs move along the abdomen in a parallel fashion, arching upwards and then downwards.
The locust’s hind femur also has a symmetrical pattern that runs along the grasshopper’s legs. They can be drawn like a zebra flowing through the femur of a grasshopper. The locust’s abdomen has various twisting holes that give it a rib-like aesthetic in the locust’s abdomen.
There are two rows of these breathing holes, one that is above the abdomen and the other that runs below the abdomen.
A grasshopper’s wings grow from the locust’s shield-like feature that forms on the locust’s head. This is called the prothorax, and the wings ooze from this part of the locust and fall on the locust’s belly.
The wings will have a cracked glass-like aesthetic on their surface, giving them the unique spider web-like wing shape associated with insects. This can be drawn by creating fissures that run along the flow of the wing, giving it the natural insect look.
You want to make sure you go through each area of the grasshopper, from head to belly, slowly adding in the details. Make sure you add in as much detail as possible using the schematic locust reference guide to aid you in your drawing process.
The goal is for you to take your time, slowly drawing the grasshopper with a pencil to make sure all the details are placed correctly in the drawing. You also want to make sure that all the details make sense in terms of how they are placed side by side.
Step 3:
Add Color to Your Grasshopper
Grasshopper drawings can be colored in a variety of ways, but they are generally green with a small amount of different colored details. We can start with the head once our grasshopper sketch is complete, whereby we add a light green pencil shadow to the head area.
A good suggestion is to apply green, yellow and brown colors to the upper part of the grasshopper. We can also add small pattern marks around the face and jaw to give the grasshopper a more unique and natural look.
The way we make the grasshopper have a true color palette is also about how the colors are placed. This means we can mix and match colors to create gradients in our grasshopper drawing. We want to keep this in mind because we want to emphasize the different characteristics of grasshoppers.
See how grasshoppers increase in size using crayons for shading. You want to add light moments with your yellows and create transitions to shadows with darker colors like greens and browns.
Use black and brown pencils to create shadows around the different features of the grasshopper with its connection points and overlapping sections. This may have been the case with the joints, anterior thorax, and other areas where the locust fragments appeared to have been joined.
You want to emphasize different features of the grasshopper using color, which we do by mixing colors. Consider the belly: We can give dimension to the belly by creating a dark to light gradient in each belly spiral. With the grasshopper’s legs, we can start to be a little more playful with our palette.
Try to keep the look natural and organic, and make sure that the color placement is consistent. This means you want to keep the palettes symmetrically placed in a symmetrical pattern inside the femur.
The hind legs are divided into two main parts: the femur and the tibia. The tibia is the long part that goes down and places the grasshopper on the ground. This component of the grasshopper can also be colored and is usually orange or pink.
When you color the leg, the pattern of the femur can be colored as desired, although the pattern around the pattern should be yellow-green. The tibia may have a mixed pink/orange color.
Step 4:
Shading the head and chest with a pen
Once we add the pen mark, we’ll start with the head again. This should be approached with patience as we go through each part of the grasshopper. We can color the eyes completely with a black pen to create contrast. We can also use our pen to outline important features of the grasshopper.
We can also add lines as well as dots to give texture to the drawing.
We want to use our pen to shade the grasshopper. We want to add shadows around the chest and head area to create more dimension in the locust drawing.
Step 5:
Polish your legs and upper belly with a pen
As we added line work and shaded the pins, we wanted to look at the different joints and how the grasshopper connects together with its different characteristics. We want to shade each area of the grasshopper to give it a little more contrast and definition.
We can do this by painting over different parts with a pen or shading with our pen, we can also do this by adding lines or dots.
The point is to use the markers in any way to emphasize the features a bit more.
As we add pen marks around the upper abdomen area, we can outline the breathing holes and different separation areas in the body. When skimming the fuselage, we can also use the pen to run through the crack-like lines inside the wing to make these lines clearer.
Step 6:
Polish the wings, legs and lower belly with the pen
As we slowly worked out how to draw the grasshopper with our pen, we wanted to make sure we spent time on each section. This is especially true for the wings, as we want to be patient and delicate with the way we brush the pencil lines with our pen.
For the belly, we want to add a gradient from dark to light in each spiral. This means we’ll create a shaded and highlighted area, giving each spiral a bit more dimension. As you add some pen detail to the leg, you can add a small set of spikes along the tibia.
This gives the foot a more realistic quality, and the foot often has a set of spikes running along the tibia.
With the femur patterns, we wanted to use the shading pen strategically. We mainly want to lightly outline the colored pattern running along the femur. That way we emphasize the pattern and color of the legs.
You can also add small scratches and spots on the abdomen, which are an indication of texture and roughness on the grasshopper’s body. This shows that it is already working and interacting with the environment.
Take your time with your pen ball detailing in the grasshopper. Try to work for a while, slowly going through each aspect of the grasshopper. Let’s see how you can add pen marks to highlight different features.
Step 7:
Add Shadows to Grasshopper
Finally, we want to give the grasshopper a shadow to suggest a realistic interaction with the space around it. We do this by using our pencil to draw a shadow below the grasshopper along a flat plane.

Step 1:
Draw a large circle as the path for the Labrador retriever’s head. First make four small marks to represent the height and width of the circle. Then connect the marks with curved lines to create the shape of the circle. Make a light sketch at first to make it easier to erase if you make a mistake. If you have trouble drawing a circle, draw the outline of a cup, bowl, or any other object with a rounded edge. Step 2:
Draw a long, curved, horizontal line across the circle to help you place the Labrador retriever’s facial features later on. On top of the horizontal line, near the left side, draw a vertical, curved, and shorter line for the other guide.
Step 3:
Draw a small circle on the bottom, left side to guide the Labrador retriever’s muzzle. Use the four-mark technique to draw this circle. Place it just below the horizontal guide. The bottom, left side of this circle should be outside the edge of the big circle.
Step 4:
Add a guide to the dog’s first ear by drawing a long vertical line on the right side. At the top, draw a diagonal slope to the right. Pay attention to the length of these lines. Draw a line at the bottom connecting the first two to form a large triangle and complete the guide for the Labrador retriever’s ears.
Step 5:
On the left side, draw a long, angled line as a guide for the Lab’s other ear. The tip blocks most of this ear, so don’t draw the entire triangle guide. Step 6: Draw a few short lines below the head to serve as a guide for a bit of the dog’s neck.

Step 7:
Lightly outline the dog’s eyes inside the head into two small circles. The eyes should be on the horizontal directional line and on either side of the vertical directional line. Once you have determined the correct position and size of the Labrador retriever’s eyes, darken the lines. The left eye should be slightly smaller than the right eye because the head is slightly turned.
As you darken the right eye, make the edges longer and more pointed. For the left eye, only the right corner of the eye should be highlighted due to the way the dog’s head is turned. Add a curved line above and below each eye for more detail. Divide these curves into short strokes for a fur-like texture.
Step 8:
Inside each dog’s eyes, draw a small circle to represent the glare. You can add a tiny glare circle inside the right eye for more detail. Inside each eye, draw a small circle and fill them in for the pupil. Don’t overlap the small glare circles when you shade the pupils. Use a dark value for the pupil but do not press the pencil too hard, or you may tear the paper.
Draw a few more lines inside each eye to emphasize the shape of the eyeball. Draw a few curved lines inside each eye, near the bottom edge. The left eye and the right eyeball are narrower due to the way the head is rotated. Draw a series of curved lines made up of short strokes above each eye to create the Labrador retriever’s bushy eyebrows.
Step 9:
Inside the circular path for Lab’s muzzle, lightly draw a small oval for the nose. Place this oval on the left side, just above the edge of the circle that is the guide for the head. Once you get the right size and position of the oval, darken the top edge first. Make lines for the edges of the oval curve to point inward to create the nostrils. Make the ends of the curves darker and thicker to accentuate the dog’s nostrils.
Add a vertical line at the bottom to bisect the bottom of the Labrador retriever’s nose. The right nostril should be slightly larger than the left one due to the viewing angle. Don’t make the nostrils too big, or your dog may start to look like a pig! Use short strokes when you darken the bottom edge of the nose.
Step 10:
Add the top of the Labrador retriever’s muzzle by first drawing a small line under the nose. Follow the bottom edge of the original large circle and draw the right part of the upper lip as a wavy line. The lip should end inside the original small circle. On the left, draw a smaller line for the rest of the upper lip. Curve the left line upwards to create the bottom edge of the left upper lip. Use the left edge of the original small circle as a guide to shape the retriever’s muzzle. Darken the top left part of the original small circle above the nose to complete the top of the muzzle.
Step 11:
Draw the lower lip/chin under the mouth using a series of curved lines. Make the chin stay in the shape of the original small circle. Don’t draw it too low. Add long, curved lines on the sides for the Labrador retriever’s lower lip. The entire shape of the snout should not extend beyond the original small circle too much.
Step 12:
Use the large triangle on the right as a guide to draw the Labrador retriever’s first ear. Follow the basic path of the tutorial but use short strokes as you darken it for a fur-like texture. Make the bottom part of the ear wavy and wider than the guide. Add a few short strokes in the upper left to create a fur fold at the dog’s ears.
Step 13:
Use the main circle as a guide to draw the rest of the dog’s head. Follow the base line of the circle but make the top flatter as you darken the lines. Use short strokes along the line to create a fur-like texture. Make the left side of the tip narrower than the edge of the original circle. The line right next to the eye should protrude slightly for more structure. Use short strokes to darken the lines under the head and slightly create the neck of the Labrador retriever.
Step 14:
Use the left corner line as a guide to draw the retriever’s other ear. Draw a long, vertical line at the top made up of short strokes for the base of the ear. Then follow the guide’s path but make the curves more curved. The bottom end of the dog’s ears should be thin and protrude slightly beyond the guide.
Step 15:
Draw a series of short strokes in the shape of the head to accentuate the Labrador retriever’s coat. Use short strokes above the eyes for the eyebrows to make the face more expressive. Add some under the eyes and on the sides of the face for more bone structure. Don’t think too much about adding strokes; they are just short lines arranged in different shapes. Draw some short strokes on the right side, below the ears, to make the fur on the dog’s neck. Add some short strokes under the muzzle to create vertical lines for the loose skin on the throat.
Step 16:
For a cleaner look, remove as much of the original guide lines as possible. Don’t worry about deleting all the instructions. It’s okay to leave a number behind. Redraw any final outlines that you may have accidentally erased.
Step 17:
Final step: Add some shadows to your Labrador retriever drawing for more details. Shade the dog’s eyes using a value slightly brighter than the pupil. Use an average value for the nose too. Use a lighter value at the tip to create a stripe to show off the shine. If desired, you can stop shading behind the nose for the white Labrador. Shade the rest of the hound’s head using a value slightly lighter than the nose. Separate the individual strokes slightly so that the white of the paper goes through and emphasizes the fur-like texture. When you’re shading, use strokes that follow the general direction of the dog’s fur. Above the eyes, the strokes should curve to the sides from the center. This process can be very time consuming, so be patient and take breaks. The strokes on the dog’s muzzle should start at the nose and radiate to the sides. Use a darker value for the top of the muzzle below the nose.
